Moving from 100 point to 1000 point grading

Providing Rockbridge Seminary students with learning tips, ministry resources, and course upgrade news

Beginning with the May 2009 Term, all courses will move from the present 100 point grading system to a 1000 point grading system, giving professors more flexibility in providing assignment feedback.

To receive a “Satisfactory” grade in a course under this new grading system, you must earn 800 points or above through the learning exercises assigned by the course. If you earn less than 800 points, you will earn an “Unsatisfactory” grade.

I really wish you had consulted someone familiar with statistics before you made this move. It is a figment of imagination to believe that a 1000 point grading system will allow refinement in expressing the achievement of a student. Evan a 100 point grading system is deceptive in its expression of differences in student achievement. Does anyone really believe that a person who receives, say, a 95 has achieved less than a person who receives a 96? Assignments only sample what a student knows. Sampling has well known benefits and well-known pitfalls. I think the faculty are deluding themselves if they think otherwise.
