Meet Rockbridge Seminary Student Corey Tabor

Corey TaborName: Corey Tabor

Hometown: Cedar Park, Texas

Academic Program: Master of Divinity

My family: I have been married to April Tabor for nearly six years, and we serve together at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She is the Children’s Director and is pursuing her M.A. in Children and Family Ministry through Bethel Seminary’s In Ministry Program.

My church: I serve at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. Our mission is to introduce people to a Greater Leader, a greater way, and a greater life. We currently have about 3,500 members who attend our church, and we have three worship services on Sunday morning. We are a purpose driven church seeking to reach this community for Christ.

My ministry: I serve as the Maturity and Ministry Pastor at Greater Mt. Zion overseeing membership, discipleship and adult ministries. I oversee the ministries that move people from membership through maturity into ministry service at our church.

I also am the Founder and President of III Coaching, LLC a life coaching and ministry coaching firm that informs, instructs and inspires people and organizations to fulfill their God-given purpose through conferences, seminars, workshops and various media outlets. Through III Coaching, I published my first book, “Being: A 30-Day Guide to Being Who God Created You to Be.” It is a devotional guide designed to help people embrace who God has created them to be so they can do what God created them to do out of their being. The book is available in paperback and audiobook formats.

Prior to coming on staff at Greater Mt. Zion, I was the founding Campus Staff Member of Texas Gospel Fellowship, a ministry to African American students at the University of Texas at Austin through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. The ministry grew to over 130 students in just 4 years.

My primary gifts are preaching/teaching, leadership, pastoring and pioneering. I love using my gifts to partner with others in the body of Christ.

One word that describes me: Passionate

In my spare time: I love to play golf, watch football, read books and watch movies. I also enjoy meaningful conversations with family and friends. On an off day, I will often be seen on my cell phone talking to someone I love.

Favorite Bible verse: Ephesians 2:10 – We are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works which he prepared in advance for us to do.

Spiritual hero: Gaylon Clark, My Pastor

Vision: I feel called to plant a multi-ethnic church in Central Texas that reconciles people to God, themselves, and one another. We want to connect people to their Creator, to the way He created them, and finally to others who have been created differently from them; all to bring God glory and draw people to him.

I also see myself continuing to serve as a resource in the Kingdom of God through writing books and music, as well as speaking around the country. I would love to teach and consult with churches, colleges and seminaries in the area of organizational leadership and multi-ethnic ministry.

Finally, I want to be one who sends others out and provides a platform for their gifts to be used to advance the Kingdom of God.

Why I applied to Rockbridge Seminary: I applied to Rockbridge Seminary for three primary reasons. First, I wanted an applied seminary education where the theories and theology could be applied in an actual ministry context. Secondly, I applied to Rockbridge because I valued being able to remain in my current ministry context where I am being trained by my pastor and I can be home with my wife instead of uprooting our entire family for three years to potentially move again to a location for ministry. Thirdly, the cost of Rockbridge was so much more economical than other seminaries I considered. It was so affordable that my church has agreed to pay for my entire education. That’s a blessing!

What I like most about Rockbridge Seminary: I love the fact that I can learn with students who are doing ministry in various contexts and I can apply what I am using day to day as I serve in my church. I also appreciate the brevity of the classes. We get right to the point instead of beating around the bush when it comes to what we need to learn to be effective in ministry.
