Anyone who encourages others to praise God can be referred to as a “worship leader.” Worship can involve music, but it can happen without it as well. And while aspects of the worship leader’s role may be inferred from Scripture, there are no requirements to have one. A pastor or a team of people can serve together to accomplish these goals just as well, if not better than, a single person.

The idea of a “rule of life” may sound a little bit formalistic.  In reality, a rule of life is simply a thoughtful approach to the way that we live our lives each day to promote spiritual growth and fruit. Jane Tomaine explained:

The word “rule” comes from the Greek for “trellis.” A trellis is a tool that enables a grapevine to get off the ground and grow upward, becoming more fruitful and productive. In the same way, a Rule of Life is a trellis that helps us abide in Christ and become more fruitful spiritually.” (Jane Tomaine, quoted in Peter Scazzero’s Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, p. 196)

For example, if you normally have a quiet time at a certain point in the day that is one of your rules.  If you regularly pray before meals that is the rule you practice.  If you have a time of family devotion on a regular basis, that is a rule.  Most of us practice many rules in our lives, but we have not systematically examined each of them.  Remember, the worth of a Rule of Life is not so much in what it says in words; but in the life lived by it. Not lived, a beautiful Rule is merely a dead letter. Well lived, an imperfect Rule becomes spirit and life.

The Rule of Life is studied by Rockbridge Seminary students in the course “Practicing the Spiritual Disciplines,to be taught in 2012 during 2012-T1 (Jan 3 – Feb 27 term). This course is offered as an elective for the Master of Divinity and  Master of Ministry Leadership programs.

Building an Effective Ministry Team

This course is a study of the leadership skills required to build effective ministry teams, both church staff and volunteer. The course examines the characteristics of high performance teams, clear common goals, diversity of roles in teams, effective team processes, how to build the team, the role of communication in team building, and pitfalls to avoid in team development.

The course is taught during an eight-week term that includes a course introduction week, six Learning Units, and a learning evaluation week. All units are designed to help the learner fulfill the learning objectives of the course. Learning units may include lecture and research materials, outside reading, learning community discussion, and church-based assignments. The professor serves as a ministry learning mentor, providing almost daily interaction and facilitation among the learners.

Rockbridge Seminary requires students to recruit a local mentor for each course. Here are definitions of mentoring that communicate the kind of healthy mentoring that we teach and encourage:

  • “Mentoring links people to the resources of others, empowering them for greater personal growth and ministry effectiveness.”
  • “Mentoring is a relational experience in which one person empowers another by sharing God-given resources.
  • “A mentor is someone whose hindsight can become your foresight.”
  • “The mentor is the person who shares the God-given resources. The mentoree is the person being empowered. The transfer between the mentor and mentoree is called empowerment.”
  • “Mentoring is making available the mentor’s personal strengths, resources, and network (friendships/contacts) to help a mentoree reach his or her goals.”
  • “Healthy” mentoring is when the mentor’s focus is helping the mentoree develop to the point that the mentor is no longer needed.

Unhealthy mentoring on the other hand is when the mentoring relationship is built on a dependency, either on the part of the mentor or the mentoree. In other words, the mentor may enter the relationship because there is a need (felt or unfelt) to be needed. Instead of guiding the mentoree to become empowered, the mentor manipulates (either consciously or unconsciously) the mentoree to become dependent. The reverse can be true as well where a mentoree resists empowerment but seeks to move the mentoring relationship toward dependency. The reasons could be one of many – fear, self-doubt, guilt, etc.

Empowered for Purpose

The most effective mentoring relationships are often for very specific reasons, instead of a long-term relationship where two people just “hang out and talk.” Most mentors who can add value to your life and ministry do not have the time or inclination to enter into an open-ended mentoring relationship. They may want to, but are just not able to do so. On the other hand, if a mentor has a particular ministry strength God has given him or her and you need to develop in that specific area, many mentors will gladly invest in your life to coach you in a specific area for a specific period of time.

Therefore, the goal of mentoring is to help you become empowered to fulfill God’s purposes in and through your life. That means that BEFORE you seek a mentor:

  • You understand your design and shape.
  • You develop some idea about how God wants to use that design and shape for His purposes (your call).
  • You determine where you still need development in order to move toward your call.
  • You seek the coaching of a mentor to help you in a specific area of development.

Suppose you need to develop in knowing how to build and lead small groups. But you’ve never done this before and know nothing about it. You’ve got materials, books, and tapes, but you need someone to coach you along the way. This person is not your teacher as much as your coach. He or she comes alongside of you to show you how to do it and to help you learn. When you’ve learned, the need for that mentoring relationship is completed.

Rockbridge Seminary students in all seminary programs are introduced to mentoring that empowers in the Touchstone Course “Developing the Focused Life” through Terry Walling’s Focused Living Resource Kit: Mentoring Workbook. Additional materials are based on Connecting: The Mentoring Relationships You Need to Succeed by Paul D. Stanley and Robert Clinton.

Are you thinking about going to seminary? Rockbridge Seminary is waiving the Application fee for the month of December. Apply now to begin your first seminary course in January 2010.

While it is a big commitment time wise to go to seminary, it doesn’t have to mean moving or leaving your current ministry. Learn where you serve, while you serve by going to seminary online. Rockbridge has no residential requirements, but you’ll be more connected to your faculty and fellow students than at a residential campus.

I interacted more in this setting than at an actual classroom. Rockbridge’s learner-focused approach really struck a chord with me.
