Why do we need these new churches? Shouldn’t we invest our efforts into continuing these other churches that have plenty of room to grow or some dying congregations that need a jolt of life breathed into them? …Continue reading Nils Smith’s reflections during his Church Planting Course at Rockbridge Seminary.

Are you thinking about going to seminary? Rockbridge Seminary is waiving the Application fee for the month of December. Apply now to begin your first seminary course in January 2010.

While it is a big commitment time wise to go to seminary, it doesn’t have to mean moving or leaving your current ministry. Learn where you serve, while you serve by going to seminary online. Rockbridge has no residential requirements, but you’ll be more connected to your faculty and fellow students than at a residential campus.

I interacted more in this setting than at an actual classroom. Rockbridge’s learner-focused approach really struck a chord with me.

Have you thought about writing to pay your way through seminary? Rock’r Dennis Miller has taken a great first step by casting his referral net wide. He recently wrote an article for Brigada, a web journal by Team Expansion, about Rockbridge.

Dennis will be receiving $250 tuition credit for each applicant that says they first saw us on Brigada’s website. As soon as they finish their first course Dennis will see the funds in his RS account. Could it be any easier?

Multi-term feedback from students about the course textbook Worship Old & New by Robert E. Webber has prompted the seminary to explore other textbook options for The Theology and Practice of Worship. Beginning with the September 2009 Term, Webber’s book will be replaced by Bob Kauflin’s Worship Matters: Leading Others to Encounter the Greatness of God. Kauflin’s book is more recent (2008) and broader in scope.

As Kauflin wrote: “Anyone who encourages others to praise God can be referred to as a ‘worship leader.’ Worship can involve music, but it can happen without it as well. And while aspects of the worship leader’s role may be inferred from Scripture, there are no requirements to have one. A pastor or a team of people can serve together to accomplish these goals just as well as, if not better than, a single person.”

Kauflin’s definition of a worship leader will be used as the basis for the “Worship Service Evaluation” assignment:

A faithful worship leader magnifies the greatness of God in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit by skillfully combining God’s Word with music, thereby motivating the gathered church to proclaim the gospel, to cherish God’s presence, and to live for God’s glory.

Beginning with the September 2009 Term, the course “The Theology & Practice of Evangelism” will study Reggie McNeal’s newly released book Missional Renaissance: Changing the Scorecard for the Church as one of the course’s required textbooks.

As part of a major assignment in the course, students will use McNeal’s “church scorecard” (featured in the book) as the basis for conducting a church assessment.
