Multi-term feedback from students about the course textbook Worship Old & New by Robert E. Webber has prompted the seminary to explore other textbook options for The Theology and Practice of Worship. Beginning with the September 2009 Term, Webber’s book will be replaced by Bob Kauflin’s Worship Matters: Leading Others to Encounter the Greatness of God. Kauflin’s book is more recent (2008) and broader in scope.
As Kauflin wrote: “Anyone who encourages others to praise God can be referred to as a ‘worship leader.’ Worship can involve music, but it can happen without it as well. And while aspects of the worship leader’s role may be inferred from Scripture, there are no requirements to have one. A pastor or a team of people can serve together to accomplish these goals just as well as, if not better than, a single person.”
Kauflin’s definition of a worship leader will be used as the basis for the “Worship Service Evaluation” assignment:
A faithful worship leader magnifies the greatness of God in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit by skillfully combining God’s Word with music, thereby motivating the gathered church to proclaim the gospel, to cherish God’s presence, and to live for God’s glory.
